trunk club.

obvs, i am enduring a great personal struggle with my time these days, trying to get the new company website (uh, and online store-yeeps) up and running, while simultaneously also getting the actual company off the ground and handling a surprising volume of clients, all the while maintaining a rigorous mani-pedi schedule. which is why there has been little to zero blogging, which is why i can't even respond to phone calls in a timely fashion, which is why i've enlisted the services of TRUNK CLUB, in order to make sure sugarbear's wardrobe is on and poppin' this 2013. it's pretty much a personal stylist that picks out MAN CLOTHES and mails them to you, and you send back whatever doesn't work. clearly, it's geared toward dudes, but i wear the pants when it comes to the pants b-radical is wearing, so me and amandalynn will be working together on a fresh look for the hubs this spring. headquartered in my previous hood (chicago), trunk club makes it a point to source items from local and smaller clothing/shoe/accessory vendors, so i anticipate seeing some very unique items when trunk numero uno shows up next week. also, if you're a trunk club member, you can make appointments to stop by the actual brick and mortar location in RiNo Chi, to hang out and drink old fashioned's whilst a probably adorable gal attends to your menswear needs. and the place looks like this, so basically, when are we going to chicago?

stay tuned, and feel free to sign up (or sign your man up) for trunk club, because i get some sort of reward for every referral. WINNING. seriously, click here because mama needs a new pair of shoes. for her husband.

important new emoticons.

i heart mcsweeney's big time and most of their articles give me an extended case of the giggles. like decorative gourd season? i've been laughing about that shit for months. i also happen to love emoticons, so this list has naturally been a real big hit with my eyeballz. i like it so much that this is just a straight copy-paste job, but you can see the real mcsweeney's article here.

in five years' time.

i bought this today, be-yotches.
i figured i will start it on our first anniversary, which is sunday, for those of you who are not my husband (b-rad is right on top of that, rose, when it comes to anniversary celebrations). and here's why: a whole lot has changed in one years of life-slash-marriage, people. for starters, one of my bridesmaids is back in the U.S. of A. again, as opposed to singapore, where she lived one year ago. one of my bridesmaids moved away to live with her boyfriend (BOOOOOO). other friends got hitched and are already preggos. the last harry potter movie came out. sugar bear won a golf tournament. prince william got himself married. i wrote a poem about a sofa. wilson phillips really made a comeback. i met jonathan adler and suzanne kasler. target for missoni happened. kelly wearstler started a blog. important people passed away. this list could go on, but you get the idea.

so i think this will be cool. we shall see how goes it. i mean, one line a day, right? life's not hard when you're setting realistic and attainable goals. plus it is small and pretty and has gold-edged pages. plus it reminds me of this tremendously awesome song from the processional to our wedding, by noah and the whale. i would have pasted it up in here, but embedding has been disabled by request? what? say it ain't so, noah. so instead,

I'M BACK I'M BACK I'M BACK!!

heavens to betsy, bitches. july really stunk and so did august, but i'm here to tell you that just when you are starting to think things won't improve, THEY DO. so many dankes to those of you who cared... all three of you. just jokes! it was really like four of you. FIVE, if you count the badasses over at ceylon et cie, who totally gave me a shout-out on michelle nussbaumer's blog after i wrote about my trip to visit their amazing shop in dallas. you may recall seeing ms. nussbaumer in last month's house beautiful, showing off her tricked-out custom truck (the NUSS-BOMB? that is what i'd call it anyway).

anyway, this makes me feel really cool. i was too busy being down in the dumpholes to notice this occurred way back in july, so lesson learned: internet slumps and general feeling sorry for myself need only last for a few days at the most, so i'm back. look forward to stories about steve the dog and lots of posts about things i'd buy or not buy at anthropologie/target/jcrew. maybe i will put some ideas for a new haircut on here. maybe i will post a scandalous tell-all about people who suck a bag of dicks! maybe i will show you some things i've pinned on my pinterest and, if my luck holds out, i will be able to post some super rad photos of design and-slash-or craft projects that have been happening. you just never know.

hooker horse, aka a story of updates.

ever since i saw this in rue mag issue three:
i've been needing a horse hook or two in my life. you know. just a little nod to my seventh-grade nutbag obsession with all things equidae. but eff me if i can find one. although i'm generally a top-notch sourcer/finder, i am batting a zero on this one. IF YOU HAVE A SHINY BRASS HORSE HEAD HOOK THINGY I WILL BUY IT FROM YOU. or you can also tell me where to get it, as long as it isn't at your mom's house. UPDATE: i wrote this post right after RI#3 came out (like january), and then i got all down in the mouth because i couldn't find a horse hooker, which led to abandonment of this post and a major case of the sads. today while reading sketch 42, the dim bulb inside my head flickered for a moment as i realized that a) nicole of S42 is a badass and b) that was HER swanky pad in rue ( and c) she's just visited kelly wearstler's new office in la and posted a ton of photos and i practically ate my computer moniter, but i digress). renewed in my need for a brass hook of the equestrian variety, i did another search and found this one, and just  requested a custom order.
MORE UPDATE: portugesevintage of etsy has already emailed me back to say my custom order will be ready tomorrow. i should note that it took approximately 14 seconds for paula to respond to me, so were i distributing customer service awards, it would go like this: paula/portugese vintage, zappos (precious shoe angels from heaven), all of the employees of my fit foods*. you think i'm lying about the speed of paula's response?
*every single time (not an exaggeration) i go into my fit foods, they flabbergast me with compliments. i always, always look terrible and i'm not very approachable (AKA HUGELY GRUMPY ALL THE TIME), so it is always shocking, followed immediately by happiness and then an overall good feeling about myself/my purse/my wrist tattoo/my stickers on my phone/my nail color for the balance of the day. one time an employee, after a 5-minute convo about how awesome my stuff was, told me that she thought we were SOUL SISTERS. and i was like YES YOU ARE CORRECT, TINY BEAUTIFUL ASIAN GIRL WHO LOOKS LIKE A PILATES POSTER, THERE IS UNITY IN OUR AWESOMENESS, CAN I HUG YOU? i realize that i constantly toot my own horn over here at WWNC, but mainly i'm making fun of myself, and even if i weren't, it isn't like anyone reads this blog. so anyway. my fit foods. go there, buy the killuh chili, and allow them to tell you how amazing you are.

girl talk: all day.

no, not the kind of girl talk that involves tickle panty fights. this kind. i highly recommend you download the newest album, because it is fah-ree, y'all. GET. IT. HERE. also, many apologies for not having it on here sooner. i've got a major case of the sicks, after fighting an intense germ warfare battle at my office (and losing). for the record, if you are just the teensiest bit sick, STAAAAAAY HOME. do not go in public and thusly spread the sadness of whatever illness that is ailing you. and for pete's sake, don't get me sick, because it makes me super grumpy.

the rothko chapel.

in 2011, the rothko chapel will turn 40. if you've not been to visit, you are missing out on a remarkable and beautiful experience. if you've got friends or family coming to houston for the upcoming holiday season, maybe put this down on your TO DO list. the RC is open every single day of the year (including holidays) and admission is FREE (donations are welcome). hours are 10am – 6pm daily. for all you lovebirds out there, the rothko chapel is also available for weddings. from their website: In 2011 the Chapel will celebrate its fortieth anniversary, having achieved, in those years, recognition as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the second half of the twentieth century. In 2001 the Chapel was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, an honor awarded before the institution was fifty years old. The Chapel regularly makes top ten lists of places to visit, and is a featured entry in National Geographic's book Sacred Places of a Lifetime: 500 of the World's Most Peaceful and Powerful Destinations, published in 2009.

dragons and chenonceau.

if you love (and can't afford) schumacher fabrics, you'll probably also love schumacher's stationery collaboration with dempsey and caroll. although these cards are slightly less bones than say, one yard of fabric, you'll still need to save your bacon for such fine paper goods. but as we all know, fancy writing papers are the mark of a lady, so get out your (common law husband's) AMEX and snap some of these boxed sets up STAT. why? because when, ever in your life, have you ever thought "man, i sure hate going to the mailbox because it's always crammed full of those annoying, hand-written notes." seriously. the last time i thought that was like, the seventh of NEVER. ps-please excuse my recent blog hiatus. i'm sure this stuff has been around for A. WHILE. but i've been heavily involved in a personal project called 'working myself into an early grave' which is hopefully going to be wrapping up circa THIS AFTERNOON.

mulberry, alexa, things i can't afford.

dammit. i just found out that the bag that i've torn out of no less than four magazines costs approximately $1,150. so i guess i'm not getting it after all, even in the sweet 'natural summer tweed' option that is slightly less at $950, because i'm pretty sure purchasing a handbag of that dollar amount is not as morally sound as say, donating the money to a starving nation or an act-of-god weather tragedy or the humane society. which leads me to suggest that the makers, or rather, the PRICERS of mulberry bags go hang out with the likes of kate spade (stingy hoe-bag hoe) and wes anderson (who fricking de-followed me on twitter), so that you can all be jerks together. however, i would be willing to recant my comments and forgive you if one of these gems shows up on my doorstep in the next few days. except maybe not you, wes. de-following me on twitter was pretty cold.

lifetime achievement award: my parents.

in case you were wondering why i've been such a negligent blogger of late, it's because i've been super busy galavanting about the countryside, doing things like hanging out with joan collins's's' stepson, immersing myself in projects involving catpaint and going to my youngest brother's college graduation, which was kind of a huge deal. we had quite a lot to celebrate, as my brother spencer is the youngest of the six kids in my family and the last to graduate (summa cum laude, incidently. way to go, nerd brother!). it is worth noting and worth repeating that my humble parents have financed six college educations, SIX, and by financed, i mean cash money. dollar dollar bills, y'all (not that there is anything wrong with student loans). it's also worth mentioning that all six of us graduated in four years, several of us graduated with honors, and most of the time, there were two of us in college at the same time. during my senior year of college, my younger sisters were a junior and a freshman, also in college (which equals three in college, for those of you who did not graduate with honors in math). does your wallet hurt just thinking about it? mine sure does. i'm still not sure how they paid for it, along with everything else you have to pay for when you have that many chilluns, but my dad has (had?) a running joke where he gave the baby calves names like january, february, march and april - named to represent the month of college that they would eventually pay for. aaaaaaanyway, i could go more and more into how remarkable my parents are to have done this on modest salaries, or to have done this at all, but i'll just post pictures instead. side note(s): i've done my best to post these chronologically, but my sister brandie graduated prior to digital cameras (PDC), i never received copies of her graduation photos, and she refuses to scan any for me. the first picture is my older sister angela's college graduation and brandie's high school graduation, both in 1999. lovely painting on the right (victorian lovers at sunset) by yours truly (NFS).

angela's ku graduation. i think this is was taken at the chancellor's house, prior to all of us getting the worst sunburns IN LIFE. thanks for the heads-up, baby jay.my acu graduation, where you get to select one person to walk with you and they wear a white robe and put your hood on you (this is that purple and brown scarf thing i'm wearing... i've never seen it at anyone else's graduation)(which doesn't mean it's cool). i picked my sweet angel mother. chelsea's harding graduation. brandie's graduation photo would go right above this one, but did i mention that she's not going to scan and send it to me? brad's ku graduation. this photo (brad and his now-wife, then girlfriend shannon) is an exact replica of a photo my parents took when my dad graduated from ku. spencer's harding graduation. there's another photo that showcases our AGE ORDER photo skills, but i'll save it for an AGE ORDER round-up post. is that a liberty of london for target one-shoulder number i'm wearing? yup. did it kind of make me look like a clown in these photos? yeah, kinda. spencer and his adorable bride, jessie. apparently, this guy had time to go to class, have friends, be on the cross country team, fall in love AND get married, all prior to graduating with honors. he's also very well-liked by professors and the elderly, and his hair is that color naturally.and this one is because it is hilarious. taken shortly after spencer was born, so my parents are approximately 30 EFFING YEARS OLD in this picture. for the ten-trillionth time, that's how old i am right now.
